Actual Review: I now know why people really seem to enjoy Queen of Shadows. It definitely picks up a lot more than HOF did. Oh where to even begin on review this?
It has been quite a few months since I’ve revisited the realm of Celaena (Also there’s a good chance i’ll call her that instead of Aelin because i really like the name like eventual name for child off in the far off distance. I will try to type Aelin but i like Celaena okay just so we’re clear) Right where were we.
Okay, so it has been quite a few months since i read Heir of Fire and it was quite a nice return to the world i fell in love with back in 2015.
As much as it slightly annoys me that a main character has a complete name change in the middle of the series like SERIOUSLY, I can easily see the character growth that Aelin goes through over the course of HOF that really climaxes and culminates in Queen of Shadows. seeing her devotion for her court and family is something that I really liked. As Celaena she never forgave and never forgot, but as Aelin she is beginning to let that go, just slightly. She isn’t called fire breathing bitch queen for nothing. She still needs to hold that B**** part.
Now i wasn’t killed or put in an emotional hangover like it seems people normally are after a SJM book, maybe it’s just me, IDK. But i really quite enjoyed this story. The characters, the plot, the slow-burn romance. Everything.
We get to see even more of Manon & Toothless… i mean Abraxos. Manon is having a great arc set up that I really can’t wait to see in EOS & TOG6. I had really enjoyed her start in Heir, but i really liked seeing her being torn between following her Grandmother and the taught traditions she’s been following for centuries and what her gut is starting to tell her. The big moment that causes her to really start questioning near the end of QOS is quite heart wrenching and i loved it. I can see both ships with Manon that people really got up in arms about. While knowing what does play out in EOS, i do wish that SJM had decided to go the other way just so we could have an LGBT+ ship in this series especially where it lacks diversity in other places as well. But we can’t have everything. And as i haven’t read EOS yet, i dont know how the actual ship plays out and if it is just OMG LOVE it with the way Rowaelin becomes in QOS.
Oh the romance of this book, i thought it was great. Before starting QOS i saw Rowaelin as more of a BROTP bc i just didn’t see the romantic side of the chemistry in HOF. I thought they could be great as Best friends, like those sassy friends that give each other all the shit kinda like Aelin & Aedion do in QOS. oh that brotp is my life. Sassy Cousins, i love it.
This book has the same problem as HOF as it lacks a great big deal of Nehemia.. shut up its been a year and i’m still not over it.
I thought the plot was at a great pace for where the book sits in the series and that the action and twists were practically around every page.
Lysandra is a great addition to the cast of characters that SJM has created and i do think Aelin needs a friend to confide in and talk about fashion & Chocolate with (though no one will ever replace Nehemia #neveroverit)
Overall i really loved Queen of Shadows and will definitely jump to Empire of Storms soon before the release of TOG6, but first i’ve got alot other books to read in the next few months. I’ll get to it eventually. Maybe i’ll wait til after TOG6 is out and i can just read both and avoid that major ending in EOS i keep hearing people react about ( thankfuly i dont know the spoiler)
